Memorandum of understanding aims to create opportunities and actions
to use EVs in the city and reduce pollution

The municipality of São Paulo and Renault-Nissan Alliance today announced a unique partnership to jointly study how electric vehicles can preserve the environment in the city and also improve the life quality in the state capital. The goal is to identify opportunities and investments needed to make possible to use electrical automobiles in Sao Paulo, the state capital. São Paulo is the first city in South America to sign this kind of agreement, confirming city’s and Renault-Nissan Alliance’s leadership in initiatives to minimize climate changes.

Unlike traditional automobiles, electric cars have no fuel tank and no tailpipe, and produce zero polluting emissions. In addition, electrical cars help minimize the noise level that is typical in urban settings, having the potential not only to improve urban mobility and energy independence, but also quality of life.

The memorandum of understanding signed today between the municipality of Sao Paulo and Renault-Nissan Alliance initiates the creation of a working group that will study the feasibility of this project, and will present a complete proposal to create and develop ways to make it real.

“São Paulo municipality has been incisive in implementing actions against global warming. We have created municipal policies focused on climate change and we have a kind of an inventory about emission gases and greenhouse effect in São Paulo, which has been our guideline. The establishment of this partnership is a complementary step to minimize gases emissions,” says Municipal Secretary of Green and Environment, Eduardo Jorge.

Following the holistic vision of zero-emission mobility established by the Renault-Nissan Alliance, the group will analyze all aspects related to the introduction of electric cars (infrastructure, resources and products) and will include other companies, governments and organizations in the discussion that can contribute to this work. Among the points to be analyzed are the implementation and the maintenance of a charging network, incentives in order to facilitate electrical cars adoption, and educational campaigns about the advantages electric vehicles bring to the city, its population and environment.

“Renault-Nissan Alliance has already signed similar partnerships with more than 50 governments, municipalities and organizations all over the world. This memorandum points to the future and presents a new possibility to further improve the environment and the comfort of the people of São Paulo”, said Carlos Ghosn, CEO of Renault-Nissan Alliance. The company has been investing for decades in development of 100 percent electric, zero-emission vehicles.
